Day 1: Monday, 29 June 2009

Lesson 1 – Edit and Proofread – Essay Makeover
This task requires you to comment on an essay and rewrite it based on your comments. Work in pairs over email, Google Docs, Office Live or any other portal you deem suitable.

Instructions:
  1. Read external image msword.png Lesson 1-The Essay.doc.
  2. Plan your comments on the essay according to the external image msword.png Lesson 1-Guidelines on Editing.doc.
  3. In MS Word, using the Track Changes and Insert Comment functions, edit and improve on the essay. When inserting comments, you should attempt to explain why you are rejecting the original word/phrase/expression.
  4. When completed, upload the edited and commented MS Word document into iVLE Workbin, in the folder titled "3A1 IT Home Learning Lesson 1 Submission". Save file as “Names_Class_Essay Comments”
  5. Follow-up the above by using your own comments and editing to rewrite the essay in MS Word.
  6. When completed, you will also upload this MS Word document into the same iVLE Workbin folder stated above. Save file as “Names_Class_Essay Rewrite”


Day 2: Tuesday, 30 June 2009

Lesson 2 – Research and Mindmap – Autism
You will review articles related to Autism, search for Singapore agencies and organisations that provide support and resource to autistic children, and proceed to construct a mind map of your reading using the points provided. Work in pairs.

Instructions:
  1. Read the following articles:
    - Travelling with an autistic child
    - A genetic clue to why autism affects boys more
    - Website about autism
    - Autism Society of America
  2. Using search engines, look for Singapore-based agencies and organisations that provide support for autistic children. This information will come in handy for the last point listed below.
  3. Create a mindmap using the 5 points below at http://bubbl.us. Each point is to appear as a main branch of your mindmap. The sub-branches of this mindmap should be based on the above reading and research on autism.
    Points:
    - What is autism?
    - What are some of typical behavioural traits of an autistic child?
    - What are some of the challenges faced by the caregivers of autistic children?
    - How can we create a more inclusive environment for autistic children?
    - What are some local (Singapore) agencies that provide support for autistic children?
  4. Submit your mind map by embedding the image onto the Discussion page (tab found at the top of this page). Each pair should start a new thread to embed your image. Enter the subject as "Mindmap by (your names)". Check out the post by me for an examples and instruction.



Day 3: Wednesday, 1 July 2009

Lesson 3 – Functional Writing – Feature Article on Autism
Based on your reading, research and mind map, you are to write a feature article on ‘Understanding Autistic Children'.
All 5 prompts given above in Lesson 2 must be included in your article. Work in pairs.

Instructions:
  1. Go through the following resources on the linguistic and stylistic characteristics of feature articles.

    -- Top Tips for Writing Feature Articles
  2. In your pairs, using the mindmap you have created in Lesson 2 as a guide, write a feature article of between 350 and 500 words on 'Understanding Autistic Children'. You should collaborate with your partner over MSN Messenger, Google Docs, Office Live, or any other suitable means.
  3. Submit your completed article to iVLE Workbin titled "Lesson 3 Submission". Save your document as "Names_Feature"

Lesson 4 - Quiz - Terms and Concepts in News and Media
There are two parts to this lesson. Complete Part 1 individually, and Part 2 in pairs.

Part 1
(Individual Work)
You will complete a quiz on terms and concepts used in News and Media.
Please read all instructions before accessing the quiz. This is to ensure that your participation in the quiz and your results are captured accurately.
